East Leach Park Skateboard Park

East Leach Park Skateboard Park

Spencer, IA

The Spencer, Iowa Parks and Recreation Board was approached by a group of skateboard enthusiasts with a request for the construction of a skateboard park. A study of the need for a skateboard facility was then conducted and the Park Board worked with staff in gathering input and developing a conceptual plan and preliminary budget. The skateboard facility design included engineering principles and technology generally applied to swimming pool projects.

The final project includes such skateboard elements as round bowls, square bowls, half pipes, fun boxes, and ramps. These irregular shaped and various other rounded features were constructed utilizing shotcrete/gunite techniques. Stainless steel pipe was used at the interface of horizontal and vertical or inclined surfaces to protect and armor this junction.

The project has been enjoyed by skateboard enthusiasts from Spencer and the surrounding area since opening. A second phase of the East Leach Park development included construction of a parking lot, reconstruction of a sand volleyball area and connecting segments of a trail and sidewalks.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Iowa presented an Honor Award for the City of Spencer Parks and Recreation Department East Leach Park Skateboard Park project at its annual Engineering Excellence Awards.
