Johnson Outdoors

Mankato, MN

Johnson Outdoors is a manufacturer of outdoor adventure gear, with many well-known brands. Operations were being conducted out of a multitude of buildings around Mankato until it was decided to centralize into one facility. Lidstrom Commercial Realtors contracted ISG to design the new Johnson Outdoors facility on a site east of Mankato in a new industrial area visible from Highway 14.

The building structure is made up of precast panels in different colors, geometric finishes, and wall shapes which give the façade a sense of proportion in regard to the vastness of the site and building. The structure was designed for potential future expansion with removable and reusable wall panels. Due to the nature of the materials being warehoused in the building and the height to which they were being stacked, code required an Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) fire suppression system. This necessitated a large diameter water service be provided as well as a fire pump, with a separate electric service. Detailed planning was required with the electrical utility, and also for lighting and ductwork to accommodate the sensitive performance requirements of the ESFR system.

Since the facility is used for office and warehousing space, the mechanical and electrical systems had to be designed to accommodate these different uses. To provide sufficient electrical supply to meet these needs, a 1,000 amp, 480/277 volt 3-phase electrical service was provided to the building. The interior dynamics of the operation are in constant motion. Materials are processed from receiving to production, to quality control, warehousing, and finally shipping. The majority of the operations take place at the south elevation where there are 22 overhead doors with linear blue canopies.
