Minnesota State University, Mankato – Master Plan

Minnesota State University, Mankato – Master Plan

Mankato, MN

An updated master plan was created to promote the campus as a modern university known for providing relevant, high quality undergraduate and graduate programs throughout the region and state, and to become a living guide for all facilities and activities on campus.

The process identified the following issues to improve the campus and prepare for future growth: strengthen and identify the land use precincts and building zones; redesign gateways and arrival areas; redesign vehicular circulation and parking; and better define open space and streetscapes.

Working in collaboration with multiple university representatives including administration, department heads and student groups, plus campus facilities personnel, and community members, a vision was developed for what the campus should look like in both 5 and 20 years.

The updated master plan includes recommendations such as relocating and expanding academic functions to newly expanded precincts in the campus core; redeveloping existing residence halls; renovating buildings for support and conference facilities; identifying potential parking areas; and developing campus gateways that visually define the primary entry points at the campus perimeter. Additionally, the plan includes renovating the existing campus pedestrian mall and adding another; developing residential student housing; and enhancing the existing quality of the campus streetscape. This master plan was a joint project with Damon Farber Associates and showcases the how master planning efforts can transform the relevancy of a university campus.
