Waverly-Shell Rock Middle School

Waverly-Shell Rock Middle School

Waverly, IA

As a result of a major flood that destroyed the District’s 5/6 elementary, and continued partial flooding of its 7/8 middle school, the district voted on a major bond referendum to construct a new 5-8 Middle school on the west edge of town and, with assistance from StruXture, was able to get it passed. The 170,000 square foot facility designed for 800 students is broken into learning communities with spaces for multiple learning styles incorporating collaborative spaces, flexible furnishings of various types and pass-through doors to classrooms. These learning communities radius out from a central commons as well as a fine fine arts wing providing spaces for art, music and family and consumer science. The media center is on the second level in the center of the academic wings and on the main level is an 800-seat auditorium built as a tornado safe room, also centralized by the commons. The building sits on 30 acres adjacent to the the existing high school and administration building. The project was successful at combining two buildings and cultures into one amazing learning campus.
